Synchronized Swimming Becomes Artistic Swimming

In 2017 the International Federation for Artistic Swimming, FINA, changed the name of the sport from “synchronized swimming” to “artistic swimming”. In early 2020 the organization voted to approve the official name change from USA Synchronized Swimming to USA Artistic Swimming.

What is Artistic Swimming?

Artistic swimming is a sport which combines swimming and dance to such a level that it was originally called water ballet. To compete, swimmers perform solo, duet, trio, team, or combo routines. All routines begin on the pool deck, but quickly move to the water, where swimmers show off their artistry, flexibility, strength, and endurance. Routines are synchronized to music and must include certain components, depending on the level of competition. Athletes also compete individually, in the figures competition, when each swimmer performs artistic swimming techniques for the judges.

Artistic swimming, still called by its previous shorthand name, “synchro”, is a beautiful sport that attracts individuals who love the water and possibly enjoy dance or gymnastics. The sport has made considerable improvements toward the inclusion of male athletes and athletes with disabilities in competitive synchro. Sculpins Synchro welcomes all athletes wishing to learn the sport.
